BCM Innovations NEW MH WING in developement.

Simple hand launch

The Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas is amongst the most scenic roads in Queensland, Australia. One of the most spectacular sights on the highway is from the Rex Lookout when the radio controlled model gliders fly on the south-east trade winds piping in from the Coral Sea.
These model gliders perform the most amazing aerobatics doing barrel rolls, loops, stall turns and even fly inverted.

New age technology!

The  models are built from EPP (expanded poly propylene) and reinforced with laminates of fiberglass reinforced strapping tape, 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive and  coloured polypropylene tape making them extremely resilient.  They only need a two channel radio system to control them and are called combat gliders.

In light winds the EPP gliders will not fly and so on light wind days more conventional gliders can be used. On Sunday 11 and Monday 12 December  Andrew Barnes from Sydney put his fibreglass V tail through it's paces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do they have an engine?
No. They are gliders and do not use an engine to propel them. Rex Lookout is an ideal place to fly because of the wind pushing up the cliff on most days. The lookout is also easily accessible by road.

How do you make them?
We make them from EPP foam and hope to have kits available later this year that you can buy at Rex Lookout under the brand name of BCM. The BCM models are improved designs that have been influenced by our North Queensland conditions.  Some of our models have been bought from hobby stores, see below, in kit form and freighted up to Cairns.

What does it cost?
The F-20 Tigershark (pictured above right) kit costs $139, the 3M Super 77 spray adhesive about $30 and the radio controls from as low as $80. Postage for a kit is only $10. A lost model alarm is a good investment from $16 - $35  and you need AA batteries to power the radio controls.

Where can you buy a kit?
The people at the H Store in Sydney can take your order by e-mail and post your model the same day
( the latest package sent to me arrived in less than a working day,  travelling over the Queen's birthday weekend.) and Model Flight in Adelaide.

Are they strong?
They are extremely resilient. One favourite story about EPP gliders is how they have been "run over" by vehicles and can still fly.

My husband/son/brother/boyfriend/ has got model planes stored around at
home and never uses them?
So do we! Before EPP most models where built with a balsa wood frame and were covered with tissue paper and clear lacquer called "dope". More recently coloured heat shrink film has been used instead of the tissue paper and dope. Those types of models were light but not particularly strong and anything less than a perfect landing caused damage.  Learning to fly is great fun but the perfect landings don't come straight away and, in most cases, people give up after about the 10th, time-consuming and costly repair because they still haven't learnt to fly. EPP gliders do not break easily so your learning to fly is not interrupted.

How do I learn to fly?
We will help you.
